Choosing a high school senior portrait photographer can be really, really simple. It doesn’t have to be a tough choice or one that you fret over, but there are some tips that I have on going about choosing a photographer for YOU. First off there are many reasons why you should choose to hire a professional photographer, you can read more about those reasons here, and they don’t apply just to weddings or senior portraits – they apply to all sorts of events and happenings in life.
CHOOSE A PHOTOGRAPHER YOU ‘LOVE’
My biggest piece of advice for all you high school Juniors and Mom’s of Juniors (those getting ready to look for a senior photographer)… choose a photographer you love. Fall head over heels into their work and their personality, their advice and the quality of the experience. I remember when I was in high school there were photographers who were ‘in’ but you know, looking back that isn’t necessarily the best place for YOU. Show off your personality and let it SHINE… by choosing a photographer you love you will have those giddy feelings about your own photographs for many years (and you won’t groan at them at your high school class reunion).
STYLE & LOCATION
A big part of choosing a photographer you love has to do with their style of photography and their location choices. I am an on-location natural light photographer, and I also do some super fun night photography too that will add some dimension to your photographs. Those night pictures might actually turn out to be your favorites from the session, too. Look through a photographer’s work and see if the style is right for the look you want. If you want all indoor photographs at a studio, I’m probably not the photographer for you. I love coming to you – whether that be at your home, on your property, at your high school or any number of locations that I have if you don’t have one in mind.
TOUCH-UPS, PROOFS AND PRODUCT SELECTION
Worried about a few spots that have popped on your face at an ever so inconvenient time up a couple days before your session? Not a problem, make sure that the photographer you hire can take care of those spots, and I’m one of those folks! Seeing your proofs of your session is another super fun thing about your senior portrait experience and I offer a variety of ways to view them from coming to your home, meeting you in a cafe or an online gallery to share with friends and family. The last ever important point in choosing a fabulous senior photographer is the product selection – make sure that you’re not just being handed a disc. Get something tangible to have in your hands and to hang on your wall. There is nothing worse than a disc that you never touch that will go outdated in a few years, and while I do offer the option of purchasing digital negatives I also think it’s super important to have printed, lovely products that you’ll cherish for a long time.
